John is an award-winning photographer based in Oceanside, CA. He grew up in rural Maryland, where he was influenced by Fred Picker and the Maryland photographer A. Aubrey Bodine. An avid photographer from those early years, John is largely self-taught. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry and worked as an organic and computational chemist in his professional life. However, he followed his passion for photography throughout the years. He brings technical expertise and a focus on detail from his scientific background to his photographs.

After moving to California, his photographic interests were captured by the landscapes of the southwest, with its vast deserts, playas, canyons and mountains. He improved his photographic vision and technique over the last two decades by studying with photographers such as John Sexton, Ray McSavaney, and Al Weber. He works with young photographers, teaching classes in film and large format photography at Palomar College, and instruction in large format photography.

John’s photographs have been exhibited at such venues as the National Steinbeck Center, the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, CA, Yosemite Museum Gallery, the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego, and the Photographer’s Eye Gallery in Escondido, CA.
