The walls of Canyon de Chelly are composed of a massive sandstone named the de Chelly sandstone. The sands in this rock are the result of huge sand dune deposits former over 250 million years ago when the region had a subtropical climate. These wind blown dune sands are responsible for the beautiful crossbeds and textures seen in the cliff walls. |
